Set in the tranquil grounds of Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal, Beer + Bread is a festival that celebrates the two staples of a medieval monk’s diet.

Beer + Bread is a street food and drink festival organised by the National Trust. Visitors can relax and feast in the beautiful setting, or join in with an events schedule of educational workshops, family games and group activities.

The National Trust asked us to create a brand to help promote the festival. It needed to feel monastic in origin, but also fairly contemporary and independent to help attract a wider audience.

To achieve the required shift from the more traditional National Trust brand, we chose a modern take on a medieval-style typeface and created a segmented plus symbol. The cross was used as a decorative graphic throughout the marketing and again for signage and space-dressing during the event.

The reclaimed materials used for the signage were chosen as an environmentally-friendly solution that felt rustic and sympathetic to the abbey surroundings.
