These Passing Things was a temporary outdoor exhibition created by environmental artist Steve Messam for the National Trust. Inspired by long-forgotten and unused folly designs, Steve created a series of large-scale installations intended to delight and surprise modern-day visitors to Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal.
We were asked to design an identity, marketing, and interpretation designs to work alongside Steve Messam's striking artworks.
Taking inspiration from the artist's concept sketches, we focussed on the common theme which connected all the artworks — facets and triangles. From this, an angular graphic was created, which was used to form an adaptable and distinct look.
As part of the project, we created bespoke, wedge-shaped interpretation structures that complimented the artworks without distracting from them. They linked with the identity theme and hinted towards the lost folly blueprints that influenced Steve Messam.
